While diabetes already affects more than 37 million Americans, 96 million have prediabetes and 8 in 10 people aren't even aware they are impacted. At the same time, the prevalence of obesity has risen to more than 40% in adults and affects almost 15 million children and adolescents. This program will provide participants with an overview of diabetes and obesity, the medications used in their treatment, and how these diseases and their treatments are connected to oral health care.

The Let’s face it, sitting through a lecture about dental caries or caries risk assessment isn’t appealing (in fact it sounds downright boring). However, the science of clinical cariology is beginning to have an impact on restorative techniques and technology. Streptococcus mutans has more to fear than a rheostat, now that we’re armed with salivary diagnostics and bioactive materials.
